Fodor's Exploring Turkey (2nd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (March, 1997)
Authors: Diana Darke and Fodors
Average review score:

Great Book For People Who Would Like to Learn More About
I bought this book partly because I know that Turkish food features a lot of meat, and I'll be visiting with my wife who is a vegetarian. Can you believe that a book that is *ALL* about food, does not even mention vegetarianism, nor when they list "handy phrases for restaurants" do they list any phrases that deal with the topic? For that matter, they don't deal with any topic having to deal with food allergies, being on a diet, etc. Essentially this is a book about helping people make smart choices when eating in Turkey, but the only people they want to help are people who will eat anything. I should have saved my money.

Footprint Dominican Republic Handbook (Footprint Handbooks)
Published in Paperback by Footprint Handbooks (February, 2001)
Author: Sarah Cameron
Average review score:

Unexpectedly good read
Cameron's approach beats the other guidebooks in its up to date assessment of the country's politics and history as it relates to each of the regions you plan on visiting. Relevant sidebar info is sprinkled throughout the book to provide the reader with something other than the usual monotonous listings of hotels, restarants, and places to visit--though she knows her stuff here as well. This book is the most currently published of all the other titles out there.

Foundations of the Republic
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (June, 1926)
Author: Calvin Coolidge
Average review score:

An anthology of great thought from an unsung American hero
President Calvin Coolidge may have been overlooked by history, but conservatives or libertarians who seek the twentieth century U.S. President with the greatest commitment to limited government need look no further. Here is a selection of President Coolidge's speeches made during his terms of office. You will find great wisdom in his words. He fought taxes and regulation, was unusually tolerant of minorities for his time, and lived a quiet, decent life. He's a hero who deserves to remembered -- and read.

Franklin and Bache: Envisioning the Enlightened Republic
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (July, 1990)
Authors: Jeffery A. Smith and Jeffrey A. Smith
Average review score:

Franklin and Bache Enlightened Jeffersonians
Jefferey Smith's " Franklin and Bache " is a great book. Starting with the life of Benjamin Franklin and his intellectual development to the his grandson's formation of the Philadelphia Aurora and battle for liberty in the 1790's this book holds your attention. Smith shows how Franklin developed an elightened philosophy of liberty, equality, and classical republicanism and instilled it into his grandson. Young Benjamin Bache became the epitomie of Franklinian ethics: hard working, educated in the classics, sincerely devoted to republican government, and with a streak of revulsion to injustice.

In the 1790's as the Federalists began develpoment of their centralizing theories, and their Hamiltonian ideals of "energetic" government, government by a plutocratic elite, and commercial develpoment, Benjamin Bache was aroused. A firm republican, his Aurora preached the values of agriculture, liberty and sovereignty of the people, support for the French Revolution, and support for democratic as opposed to aristocratic government. Bache was an avid supporter of Thomas Jefferson and his ideals of liberty and republicanism.

Persecuted by the Federalist under the tyrannical Alien and Sedition Laws Bache stood steadfast in support of freedom of the press and the First Amendment. His untimely death due to yellow fever deprived the Federalists of their victim, but brought attention to the cause of liberty. Inspired by the ideals of Franklin and Jefferson for a liberal and enlightened society Bache proposed reform of the US Constitution, opposed slavery, supported penal reform, and care of the poor. If you want a good overview of the ideals of Franklin and Jefferson in the early republic this is a great buy.

Genocide and Covert Operations in Africa 1993-1999 (African Studies, 50)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (May, 1999)
Author: Wayne Madsen
Average review score:

Genocide and Covert Ops.
Great book on a sensitive and relatively unknown topic for most Americans. Madsen does a fantastic job of framing the germaine issues for people unfamiliar with the recent economic, political, and military history of south central Africa. Well researched and documented, he tells a compelling story of how the US government works to destabilize the region for economic and political gains.
